City Action Regarding the Quality Inn Facility Operated by LA County
At the direction of the Bell Gardens City Council, including Mayor Alejandra Cortez, Mayor Pro Tem Lisseth Flores, Councilmember Pedro Aceituno, and Councilmember Marco Barcena, action was taken today regarding the operation of the Quality Inn and Suites COVID-19 medical sheltering facility in the City of Bell Gardens. Los Angeles County opened the medical sheltering facility last week without the opportunity for public discussion and without specifics related to operational protocol.
Since that time, the Bell Gardens City Council has directed staff to assign two police patrol vehicles and personnel at the City’s expense, monitored reports of activities at the facility, heard comments from many residents and stakeholders, and continued to gather and share information from the County. In addition, the City Council has reviewed the options available regarding the use of the hotel as a medical sheltering facility. Based on this review, the City Council directed staff to notify the hotel business owner that the operations of the medical sheltering facility are outside of the allowable uses of the hotel. The City expects to work with the hotel business owner to ensure the hotel is operated in accordance with allowable uses.
